Ward off Winter blues

Ward off Winter blues with A WINDOW GARDEN

In the past winter was a depressing time for me.
I wanted to hibernate like my cats.
But this year I have started a winter garden to put spring in my living room
I added 3 shelves 1 to each side and 1 across the window. More will come and this garden will grow
Look at the roots on the Yacon. I have it in a juice jug, turned upside down. I cut off the top and used the base for water. Adding polyester batting to wick up the water worked out fantastically!

Add a touch of spring to your window. It will make you smile.

Choosing a fan for the solar heater

Most home made solar heaters use computer fans to blow air. The panels I have are commercial made. So they are larger than most home made ones I have seen. They are about 3foot by 8 foot. I found the bigger the fan the more heat is pushed thew the panel into the house.I only have 1 panel installed, and vented thew the kitchen window. I need to find a fan that will blow harder to get more heat to circulate thew the house. The fans I choose also need to be cost effective, As in the energy they use needs to be free or low cost. I hope to run the fans on solar electric panels. Either direct wired `12v dc. If I use normal 120v the could be plugged into an inverter and ran on a larger solar panel. So I have some researching to do. I have been looking at Inline Duct Fans, solar attic vent fans. etc. Do not know what to try first.

Adding solar heat to my home

I finally have 1 of the solar heating panels installed temporarily. I am testing to see if it is worth putting a permanent hole in my house. The panels were installed onto of a roof. My past neighbor in St. Louis did not want to pay to have them removed and re installed. It seems they add a great deal of added cost to replacing your roof. So I will not put them on my roof. I will build a box like structure on the ground or place them more up right to the house. But for now I will see what they will do like this for this winter.
Each month I will keep a log of temperature inside the house and out. and hours of sun hitting the panel.

Hello friends!
Time is flying. We really did not have much of a summer. I have never seen one so full of rain and cool temperatures till now.  But it seems like fall is also full of rain. Yet, I have spring fever. I keep thinking and planning what to plant next spring. I have a bit of a winter garden started in this window you can see in my video.

I also have ordered and received some (TPS) True potato seeds. They come from many different types of potatoes. These are not commercial potatoes I ordered. They are from Tom Wagner's collection of potato seed that he has been developing over the years. I plan on letting my grandson Jeremy, take some to school and grow them in the green house there. He has an agriculture class at his high school. And he is part of the FFA. (Future farmers of America. His school is in the top 10% in the FFA. So I see this are a very good experience for him.
He has hope to be a Veterinarian and/or farmer. He loves science and math among other things. So he is doing well. He is also staying with us now. So I am no longer an Empty Nester. But, I am not giving up my name, just yet.

Cabage roll recipe

Hi, friends! Sorry I have not posted in a while. I have been posting on my facebook page about my cats for a year now. And I think there page https://www.facebook.com/RebaSilk  may soon end. It's not much fun any more. So I am spending more time on youtube. Mostly garden videos. And now a bit of cooking. This is how I make cabbage roles with out the role. LOL
I may start writing again. The summer is almost over. So I will have more time to write.

Crazy weather!

We have had temps down to freezing the last couple of nights. I had to run out and get some plastic drop cloths and use some row covers I had. I covered the tomato and Peppers with empty soda and instant coffee jars.
I was not prepared for frost a month after our last frost date.  But my plants, seedlings survived. Do not know yet if the seeds not sprouted will sprout yet.
But I have been adding videos on Utube. I would love it if you would follow me there. It is giving me something to do.

My cat page on facebook has slowed to a craw. I feel like I am quickly loosing my fan base. Even thought my numbers are still there.Facebook is not letting people see my page. This is not just me. But all pages. They want us to pay, for our fans to see us. I make no money on that page. So why would I pay to be seen. Sorry about the gripe. But I need things like this blog and utube to motivated me to accomplish things. The page for my cats is just fun sharing there adventures.

Garden update

I planted my broccoli yesterday, Then today added wood mulch. And some hay bails to surround. This way I can cover with plastic, to protect. if we get another frost or snow. I found my asparagus to be completely damaged. Like mush.

Onions, they either over wintered or seeded on there own. They are mushy on the bulb. Question: Do I leave them in the ground or remove them? Will the seed be OK?
 Notes
I read onions with large bulbs like this one. It is a yellow onion that I grow for storage is a biennial, Which means you can grow it just foliage and bulbs the first year. Then they bloom and set seed the following year, The plants will die after that.

I would like to save my own seed from the plants, to use next year.  These onion bulbs would not be good for storage. Even if they were not cold/frost damaged. They'll still taste OK but the thick flower stalk that comes up from the center of the bulb will cause a large open neck on the bulb. Bulbs with large open necks don't keep well in storage.
